Top 6 Picks for Finance Electives

This month, participants from the International Master in Finance and the Master Internacional en Finanzas – Bilingüe chose the six electives that will make up the specialised tracks in corporate finance and investment banking in the third trimester.

Every year, students are offered a different list of electives to vote on, each specially designed to reflect current topics in the two areas of specialisation. Then students vote on the specific electives that best meet their needs (3 in each area). The top six electives for the 2018 class are as follows:

INVESTMENT BANKING TRACK

Trading Simulation

Behavioural Finance

Investment Banking and Dealmaking

CORPORATE FINANCE TRACK

Supply Chain Finance

Structured Finance

Entrepreneurial Finance

According to programme director Jaume Bonet, the electives that participants choose are generally closely related to the career plans post-graduation. The option to specialise improves the overall employability of graduates by providing them with specialised tools in their area of future employment.

Participant Francisco Javier Arce chose the investment banking track because he wants to hit the ground running in this field after graduation. “I think that working in investment banking is very intense,” he says, “and you are expected to be well prepared from day one. There is not much time for learning something new once you are there.”

Isabella Bousek, on the other hand, chose the corporate finance track to familiarise herself with the current challenges of the finance world. “I want to work in corporate finance,” she says, “and I believe that the electives will give me the necessary knowledge to pursue a position in a multinational corporation.”

David Cardenas chose to mix and match his electives, selecting Trading Simulation (from the investment banking track) and Entrepreneurial Finance (from the corporate finance track). “I am interested in Trading Simulation since I worked as an electrical energy trader back in Colombia and would like to continue working as a commodity trader in the future,” he says. “I also believe that Entrepreneurial Finance will help me create something on my own eventually. I am interested in learning tools that will allow me to start planning my own business further down the road.”

The electives will be launched in May of this year.
