Thomas Cambier: Data Analyst at Glovo

The Belgian alumnus, Thomas Cambier, studied the International Master in Management in 2018-2019 in EADA. After his graduation he went back to Belgium and had the opportunity to start in the operations graduate program at the Volvo group as an engineer, which is in line with his first Master degree. Last year, 2021, he came back to Barcelona and started working for Glovo, the leading delivery app in Spain, as a Data Analyst.

Tell us a bit about your current job position and what a normal workday looks like for you?

Currently I am an operational data analyst inside the matching team. This team is responsible for matching the best courier with every order, worldwide. For this we use a complex optimisation algorithm that constantly needs to be tweaked to meet the needs of different markets and business strategies. Even though my job is rather technical and involves a lot of SQL and Python, I enjoy the fact that I am the bridge between the business needs and the software engineers of my team. I get to design new features, launch them worldwide, and then evaluate their results. Doing this, I really feel connected to the company and I can make a real impact.

How did you get the opportunity to enter Glovo?

Obviously I knew Glovo from the time I was studying at EADA so I already knew it as a promising start-up. When I was looking to change jobs in spring 2021, Glovo had just received their series F fundraising and was expanding in a lot of new markets. Hence it was the ideal opportunity for me to join this growing company. I applied for the position that fitted me the most and three weeks later I already received an offer to join the team. It all went very fast but it was done professionally and they didn’t treat me like a number, even though they had hundreds of open positions at the time, so I didn’t hesitate and went for this new challenge.

How has your career journey been since you graduated from EADA?

While I was still studying at EADA, I already signed my contract to start the graduate program at the VOLVO Group so I started working right after graduation. Due to the program, I got the advantage  to try out multiple different roles inside the company to find out which one suited me best. I was working as a process engineer, project manager, business controller and much more. It was because of all these different roles, I realized I wanted to specialize more in data and all it has to offer. Hence, I enrolled in certain courses to improve the skills and technical languages needed for data analysis. At the same time, I was looking at data driven start/scale – ups who were hiring in that field and like that I ended up at Glovo, one of the fastest growing food-tech companies in Europe. Now I have been working there for over one year now and haven’t regretted it for one second.

What aspects of the International Master in Management would you highlight?

If there is one thing in which EADA really stands out, it’s the soft skill training. Coming from a technical background, this was something that hadn’t really been part of my education before and I had the chance to develop this at EADA. It is clear that it is one of the highest priorities of the school to teach its students to be self confident and to get their message across. Things like Collbato and frequent presentations contribute to this and I already notice that this has often helped me reach my goal in a professional setting. I believe this unique aspect is the point of differentiation between EADA and other business schools.

What advice would you give to future EADA Students interested in the International Master in Management?

I would tell them not to hesitate and to go for it. The classes are filled with a lot of different backgrounds, both educationally and culturally, that there is so much to learn from your fellow students alone. Besides this melting pot of people you’ll learn about the fundamentals of business that will get you ready for your career. Furthermore you’ll learn how to develop yourself more and look at things from different perspectives. This will give you a lot of benefits in both your professional and personal life. All of that in the city center of the amazing city of Barcelona. It will be one the best experiences you’ve had so far.

What advice would you give to EADA students who wish to land a job in Glovo?

The hiring culture at Glovo is aimed at attracting the best talent with a mindset of ‘hire for talent, train for skill’. So I think it is of the utmost importance that you are passionate about joining our team more than already having all the skills needed for a position. We have a value at Glovo that’s called GAS, which embraces this passionate mindset and expects us to be ambitious and go all in. To share this value is more important than to have years of experience in a certain field. If you feel that you share this value with Glovo, don’t hesitate to check out the open positions, reach out and apply. We’re still growing enormously and need all the best talent out there to come and strengthen our team!

EADA is an unforgettable, international experience that prepares you for your lifelong career. "
