Barcelona: An Experience Like No Other

From awe-inspiring art and architecture, to fascinating historical sites, captivating landscapes, and one of the finest cuisines in the world, Barcelona is a city with a contagiously vibrant spirit. Located on the northeast coast of Spain and facing the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona offers an energizing seaside atmosphere combined with the buzz of a metropolitan city.

Its distinct personality makes it one of the top choices for students all around the world. You might think, what makes this city so alluring? Here is a list of reasons that make Barcelona such a wonderful place to live.

  1. Architecture

Barcelona and its people have a sense of uniqueness. The streets of the city are decorated by the most original architectural designs, which were inspired by its own modernisme movement. Imagination, color, and passion for originality are some of the characteristics that define the architecture of Barcelona. Many of the city’s wonders were created by the Catalan artist Antoni Gaudí and some of the finest examples of his work are Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, Casa Batlló, and La Pedrera.

  1. Gastronomy

Catalan cuisine is rooted in Mediterranean traditions. You can experiment with molecular gastronomy in Michelin-starred restaurants, or relax at a bar with traditional Catalan food. You will fall in love with the tapas offered in small portions around every corner, and indulge in the delicious assortments of fresh seafood, hams, and breads. You will want to visit the Boqueria Market and experience the endless options of delightful sweets and food.

  1. History

If you are the type of person that gets a rush from exploring historical sites, Barcelona is the place for you. Walk around the Gothic Quarter and allow yourself to be immersed in a journey back into medieval times. Cobblestone streets, gargoyles, and authentic Gothic buildings will unleash your imagination. Some places to visit are the Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça Del Rei, and the church of Santa María Del Mar. Don’t forget to enter the Barcelona City History Museum!

Barcelona is the heart of the Catalunya region, and it is extremely proud of its Catalan identity, culture, and language. Nevertheless, Barcelona would not be whole without its artistic heritage. You will be delighted with by boundless options of museums to visit and street art to admire. Jump into the art world through the Fundació Joan Miró, Museu Picasso, and MNAC. Then, step out into the streets of El Born and El Raval neighborhoods and take a Street Art Tour to discover Barcelona’s alternative urban talent.

  1. Activities

The best part about Barcelona is that it is accessible. Whether you decide to walk, take public transport, or rent a bike, the city will be within your reach. In addition, everything revolves around the city center, making it a great reference point.

The city is extremely vibrant and dynamic, and definitely contagious. You will find yourself being constantly on the move and never bored. Take a hike to Montserrat for spectacular mountain views and a visit to a hidden monastery. Discover all the activities that Montjuïc has to offer as you ride a cable car over the city. Even better, head over to Barceloneta and relax on the sand while you take in the Mediterranean sun.

When the night falls, Barcelona comes alive. The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc offers a show of music, water acrobatics, and lights, which have made it one of Barcelona’s most popular attractions. If you are looking for a different kind of thrill, you can share your enthusiasm with FC Barcelona fans over a soccer match at Camp Nou. Go on and finish your night with late food, late drinks, and an enjoyable night out. Repeat.
